A glass vial filled with mercury vapor (4.88 eV between ground state and first excited state), is placed between the cathode and anode of a photoelectric effect apparatus. Assume that the glass is so thin that it will not reduce the energy of photoelectrons as they pass through the glass. Due to the presence of the mercury gas, there will now be a sharp drop in the stopping potential for certain energies of incident photons. Calculate the two longest wavelengths of the incident photons that will experience this sharp drop. The target metal of the photoelectric effect apparatus has a work function of 2.05 eV.
