A doctor spent two weeks in Central America does volunteer medical work for an NGO. When she filed her tax returns for the year, she claimed deductions for her airline tickets, meals, and hotel bills during the two week stay. However, she was surprised to hear from her accountant that IRS rules did allow her to deduct the $8,000 in salary forgone during this same period.
