Example: A 9-shelf unit contains 50 inches per shelf. There are 18,000 inches of current records to be housed, and it is projected that an additional 5,000 filing inches will be needed.
Steps:
1. Calculate the total filing inches available per shelf unit. 9 X 50 = 450 filing inches per unit
2. Total the inches of current records and projected inches. 18,000 + 5,000 = 23,000 inches to be housed.
3. Divide inches to be housed by filing inches per unit, which determines that number of shelving units to be purchased. 23,000/450 =51.1 shelving units. NOTE: .1 of a filing unit cannot be purchased, round up to 52 filing units.
