1a. Diet cola is sold in 12-ounce cans. The mean number of ounces placed in a can is 11.75 with a standard deviation of 0.2 ounce. Assuming a normal distribution, what is the probability that the filling machine will cause an overflow in a can, that is, the probability that more than 12 ounces will be placed in the can? Must show normal distribution curve with correct shading.

1b. All states are under pressure to improve teaching quality in K-12. In one state a very difficult assessment test is given to students toward the end of the year. Currently, the average score for all students in the state since the test's inception is 436 points, with a standard deviation of 72. The politicians want to set the limit for graduating from high school at 400 next year. (A student must get at least 400). What is the probability of a student graduating? Must show normal distribution curve with correct shading.

1c. A part has a specification of 6.0 0.02. The expected loss for a part that does not meet specification is $5.00. What is k in Taguchi's Loss Function? What would be the expected loss if the part measured 6.01?

Question 2 - Calculate the system reliability for the system below. To help you reason this one out, feel free to redraw the system each time you calculate a combined reliability.

Question 3 - Determine the best inspection schedule to use for the data below. Inspections cost $100 per inspection, and breakdowns cost $500 per breakdown. Assume 300 working days per year.

What would you do to get the centerline of the x-chart and the R-chart (describes this; do not do it). What would be an indication of special cause variation on a control chart? What would be an indication of common cause variation on a control chart?

Question 5 - Look at the data for problem 5 on the Excel sheet labeled Test Ques.5 (Sheet numbers are shown on the bottom in Excel). In testing the voltage of a component used in a microcomputer, the data listed were found. Construct x-bar and R-charts for these data. Determine whether the process is in control. If not, eliminate any out-of-control cases and compute revised limits.
