A horizontal prestressing force of 500kN is applied to a rectangular beam. The beam has a depth of 450mm and a width of 250mm. The force is applied at a distance of 60mm below the sections x-x axis.

(a) calculate the stress along the edge A-B caused by the applied prestressing force

(b) calculate the stress along the edge C-D caused by the applied prestressing force

(Calculation of bending stresses due to the self-weight of the beam is not required for the question).
