Question: A small detention pond has a depth of 1 m, a surface area of 105 m2 and a detention time of 10 days. The pond receives 15 mg/L of ammonium as nitrogen. The ammonium is oxidized to nitrite (NO2-) and nitrate (NO3-) by the following (mass based) reactions.

NH4+ + 3.43 O2 → NO2- + 1.29 H2O + 0.14 H+ ; vol. reaction rate = k1·(NH4+)

NO2- + 1.14 O2 → NO3- ; vol. reaction rate = k2·(NO2-)

Consider ammonium (NH4+), nitrite (NO2-) and nitrate (NO3-) for your evaluation with k1 = 0.075 / day and k2 = 0.25 / day.

Calculate the steady-state concentration of ammonium, nitrite and nitrate in the pond. (For your calculations, assume that the incoming nitrite and nitrate concentrations are negligible.)
