Case: Humpback whales are migrating past the Monterey Bay hydrophone, calling at a typical sound level of 180 dB (referenced to 1 µPa). The hydrophone is located in 900 m water depth. The ambient noise level is typically 60 dB at the hydrophone. The chemical absorption coefficient is 10 dB per km at this frequency.

Question 1: Calculate the sound pressure amplitude of the ambient noise.

Question 2: Under an assumption of cylindrical spreading, do you expect to detect whales above the ambient noise if they are calling from a distance of 5 km? Show how you calculated the transmission loss over this distance.
