You think you notice in your monthly departmental meetings that more women tend to sit up front, and more men sit in the back. To determine whether this difference is statistically significant, you record where people are sitting at one of the meetings. The data is presented in the table below. (you'll have to complete the rest of the table to answer the following questions):

Men Women Row Totals

Front of the room 5 6 __

Back of the room 8 6 __

Column Totals __ __

1) Calculate the Row and Column Totals and put them in the appropriate cells. Then, calculate the Expected Frequency for each cell (rounding to two decimal places) and put them in the appropriate cells (in parentheses next to the observed frequency) (1 pt for totals columns and 1 pt for expected frequencies = 2 pts total).

E = (RT*CT) / N

2) What is the observed X2?

Work:

3) What is the critical value?

4) Do you reject or fail to reject the null hypothesis? Does this mean you conclude there is no difference or there is a difference between observed and expected frequencies?
