Growing Degree Days

1.  Please look over pages 80-82 (Applications of Air Temperature Data) for help with this question.

Corn is planted in Maryland on March 1 and needs 2400 growing degree-days before it can be picked.  If the mean daily temperature for March through August is 65 degrees, in about how many days would the corn be ready to be picked? (Assume a base temp of 50 degrees.)

Formula:  mean daily temp - base temp= growing degree day

total growing degree days divided by growing degree day

Relative Humidity and Heat Index Problem

2.  You measure the following temperature (T) and dew point (Td).  Calculate the relative humidity. Follow the example on page 107 (Mind Tap - 4-4f Comparing Humidities).

T = 80°F; Td = 60°F

What does the dew point temperature tell us about water Vapor content in the air?

Now, using the relative humidity you calculated and the temperature, what is the heat index?
