Problem 1

In this problem, consider a receiver whose detector has output statistics that are uniform rather than Rayleigh/Rice. Specifically, the detector output for noise alone is Rayleigh and signal + noise is shown in the figure below in terms of the noise power, β2, and signal amplitude A.

If the SNR is 3 dB,
(a) Sketch Rayleigh pdf.
(b) Calculate Pd and Pfa for a threshold setting Vt = 1.5β

(c) Sketch the ROC curve (Pd vs. Pfa)

Problem 2

Instead of a Swerling target model, assume a target fluctuates between two discrete RCS values: -10 dBsm and -20 dBsm. Calculate the probability of detection for a single pulse if the two RCS values are equally likely. The threshold is set for Pfa = 10-3. Assume that a -15 dBsm RCS corresponds to 10 dB SNR at the receiver output.
