Potential difference and resistance. A conducting sphere of radius a, with conductivity u is cut into two hemispheres. Then, each hemisphere is trimmed so that it has a flat surface on top and the two sections are connected as shown in Figure 7.35. A uniform current density J crosses the upper flat surface as shown.
(a) Calculate the potential difference between A and B.
(b) Compare the result in (a) with that obtained in problem 7.14a.
Problem 7.14
Calculation of resistance. A sphere made of a conducting material with conductivity 0" is connected in a circuit as shown in Figure 7.35a. For connection purposes, the sphere is trimmed and connections made to the flat surfaces created by the cuts. The resistance R and source voltage V are known.
(a) Calculate the potential on the sphere (between points A and B) in terms of the known parameters.
determine the kVA rating of the autotransformer, the kVA transformed by transformer action, and the kVA conducted.
What is the main sequence diagram? How do results from the Westheimer model in Section 12.4 compare with the main sequence diagram?
Sinusoids of varying frequencies were applied to an open loop system and the following results were measured. (Data is from Seidel, 1975.) Construct a Bode diagram for the data.
A plant is producing 10,000 metric tons per year (10 kt/y or 10 kMTA) of a product. The overall yield is 70 wt% (0.7 kg of product per kg raw material). The raw material costs $500/metric ton, and the product sells for $900/metric ton. A process m..
Aim To understand the fundamentals of chemical bonding and ionic equilibrium and its application in engineering problems.
It will dissolve, however, in aqua regia, a mixture of the two concentrated acids. The products of the reaction are the AuCl46- ion and gaseous NO. Write a balanced equation for the dissolution of gold in aqua regia.
Consider a 1-bit version of the digital comparator shown in Figure P6.1.41. Note that the operation of this circuit is such that whichever output is 1 gives the desired magnitude comparison.
determine the discretized PID controller transfer functions (12.11) and (12.12) with N 5 10 and T = 0.1.
Determine the Thévenin and Norton equivalent circuits as viewed by the load resistance R in the network of Figure P2.1.1.
An alternative process for converting benzene to cyclohexane also uses a supported noble metal catalyst, but carries out the reaction in the liquid phase, at a temperature of 160 °C and pressure of 100 bare, in a slurry reactor.
Determine the molar free energy of vaporization, Delta vapG, for benzene at 75 C and 1 bar given that the molar enthalpy of vaporization of benzene at its normal boiling point of 80.09 C and 1 bar is 30.72 kJ⋅mol-1.
