1) Spherical tennis balls of radius 4 cm are packed into a cubical box of 80 cm long. The packing is done systematically so the balls in each tier are directly centred between the balls in the next level (also known as cubic packing). Calculate the porosity of the box.

2) If the same box was then filled with a uniform spherical glass beads of diameter 1 mm, what is the porosity? What can you conclude from the results of problems 3 and 4. Compare the results of 3 & 4; can you generalize these results and make some generic statements?

3) If you poured water into the porous media containers containing the tennis balls and the glass beads, which one will hold more water and why? Also, compute the exact amount of water contained in the two systems above.
