COIT20261 Network Routing and Switching

PART A

Question 1 What do the Interfaces in the Interface column in a routing table indicate?

Question 2 When a packet with a classful IP address arrives at a classful router, briefly explain how the router determines the destination's network address.

Question 3 In an IPv4 Header, the value of the Header Length field (HLEN) was decimal 9. How many bytes of options were there? (0.5 marks). Explain your answer or show your calculations (1.5 marks).

Calculations:

Question 4 Consider the statement "classful addressing is a special case of classless addressing" (Forouzan 2004). Briefly discuss why this is a true statement.

Question 5 When using dual-stack technique, two IP protocols are setup, one for IPv4 and one for IPv6. Briefly explain in specific terms how a router at Layer 3 determines which protocol stack to use to send a packet.

PART B

Question1 Basic block information

A company has obtained a block of IPv4 addresses from an ISP. The block included the address 191.56.125.34/25.
Calculate the number of addresses in this block, the network address, the direct broadcast address, and the range of addresses that would be available for use by hosts.

Question 2 Address allocations from a block
A company has been granted a block of classless addresses which starts at 198.87.16.0/20. You have been given the task of creating four subnets from this block, the boss has given you an estimate of the number of addresses they require per subnet, shown below. For your answer, create a table that the shows for each subnet, the number of addresses you allocated, the subnet address and it's prefix, and the last address of each subnet. Show your working in the space provided.
Four subnets with estimated requirement:
a) 1 subnet with 1,500 addresses
b) 1 subnet with 1,000 addresses
c) 2 subnets with 500 addresses each

Question 3 LAN switches vs routers
Compare and contrast the major features of advanced LAN switches versus normal network routers. Provide brief explanations of your points where appropriate and correctly reference your sources.

Question 4
The section of the Internet in the diagrambelow shows six networks and four routers, labelled R1, R2, R3 and R4. Construct the routing table of router R1by completing the table provided below the diagram. List the networks in longest mask order.

Question 5 TCP vs UDP
There are many differences between the TCP and UDP protocols. For example UDP is unreliable while TCP is reliable; UDP is connectionless while TCP is connection-oriented; UDP is generally faster in throughput while TCP is slower.
Identify three differences other than the ones named above and write a brief explanation of each difference you have identified.

PART C

Question 1
Regarding the IPv4 address depletion problem, consider the statement adapted from the lecture that "The basic problem was that the classful distribution of networks and hosts never matched real world requirements". Discuss how the classful addressing scheme failed to match "real world requirements" and two techniques used to help resolve these problems.

Question 2 In the context of ad hoc wireless routing protocols, describe how a route discovery process works.

Question 3 DHCP is critical to the operation of today's networks. Discuss how DHCP works (2 marks), and why it is critical to the operation of today's networks (3 marks). Use your own words, do not copy or quote large passages from lecture notes or textbook.
