Question: A list of streams and stream sets follows this page. Your name is listed on pages 3 and 4 against the two stream sets. For the two sets of streams associated with your assignment numbers:
Calculate the minimum hot and cold utility loads, as well as the hot and cold pinch temperatures.
Draw the grand composite curve for the set.
Using the grand composite curve, choose which hot and cold utilities you will aim to use, giving reasons for your choice.
Design a heat exchangers network (HEN) that will achieve maximum energy recovery (MER) while using no more exchangers than necessary.
Check if your HEN design achieved the aim: Nmin(MER) = Nmin. If your response is ‘no', then adapt your network so that it has the minimum number of units.
Identify the threshold temperature for both of your stream sets, with a problem table as evidence. If one cannot be calculated, please provide a problem table to demonstrate this.
You have a process that runs all the streams in your first set for one hour, then all the streams in your second set for one hour, then cycles back to the start. Find how much heat can be passed between the two networks by intermediate storage, and how much utility this saves.
Devise a heat exchanger network with UMIN/MER for the entire process described above, re-using exchangers as much as possible between the two alternating phases of operation.
