Question 1. A researcher at UPEI said she wanted to do a study on education. She is interested in how our Soc332 education variable (in years) breaks down.

From SPSS, calculate the mean of Education and the standard deviation.

Show her manually how you would calculate the following information about sample participants' education years. Do NOT use the computer to calculate parts a) to d). You MUST show your manual calculations.

a) The probability that someone has an education level above 11 years.

b) The probability that someone has an education level of 18 years, and above.

c) The probability that someone has an education level that is between 11 and 17 years of education.

d) The number of people who have an education of less than 13 years.

2. For the following 2 pairs of concepts indicate how each member of the pair are similar to each other and how they are different from each other.

• z-scores and raw data
• z-scores and area beyond the z-scores

3. Prepare a diagram that illustrates the links among the following descriptive statistics we have learned about in Soc332 and that are usable at the interval/ratio level of measurement. A list of what should be included is below.

• frequency curve
• measures of central tendency
• standard deviation

4. Describe, in your own words, the statistical concept commonly referred to as "sampling distribution of the means," including in your description how it is arrived at and what the mean of this particular distribution actually represents.

5. A researcher with Health Canada wants you to complete a report related to ‘income' and ‘family time'. He realizes you have access to a good data set, referred to from this point onward as simply ‘sample', and asks for assistance. In his research project, the researcher wants to examine whether or not people who have different levels of income also have different Life Satisfaction related scores. He expressed the desire to have each variable examined separately.

• Initially, the researcher wants you to provide him with the average ‘income level', referred to herein as Income. Utilizing SPSS and your sample (n = 50), compute/calculate the average Income.

• Now, the researcher would like you to re-code Income into the new variable, Inco2, therein indicating all incomes below $40,000 belong to the same income level; all incomes between $40,000 and $65,000 belong to the same income level; and all incomes $65,000 and above belong to the same income level. Print a copy of the corresponding frequency table for the two variables (Income and Inco2) and incorporate it into the Assignment.

• The researcher would like to have a histogram created, as it relates specifically to Income and Inco2. Please do so.

• The researcher would next like to know for those people who have an income level below $40,000; and $65,000 and above, the corresponding ‘life satisfaction score' for each of these two distinct groups. In order to complete this particular task, you will need to use manual calculations as seen in class.

• The researcher would also like to know the level of measurement of Life Satisfaction scores. Please identify that for him.

• Please calculate the confidence interval for the average Life Satisfaction score at 99% confidence, for a two-tailed test.
