The proportion of obese persons in the total US population is 34%
The incidence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) among obese persons (exposed) is 76 per 10,000
The incidence of COPD among healthy weight persons (unexposed) is 27 per 10,000

a) Calculate the incidence of COPD in obese persons that is attributable to being obese.

b) Calculate the proportion of risk of COPD in obese persons that is attributable to being obese.

c) If you could implement an effective weight lost intervention program that eliminated obesity in the total population, what proportion of COPD incidence could you remove at best? Hint: Review the example on p. 234 of Gordis.

Question 2:

Drinking during pregnancy has been shown to have several adverse health outcomes for the fetus, including Small for Gestational Age babies. Use the following 2x2 table to answer the questions below.

c) Interpret your findings from question (b) using the attributable risk percent. (hint: this means you need to calculate the AR% first)

As an epidemiologist at the Department of Health, you have been asked to investigate the impact of a new coal-burning facility on childhood asthma in your city. You collect the following information over the one year that the facility has been in operation:

• Incidence of childhood asthma in the neighborhoods within one mile surrounding the facility (exposed) was 9.6 per 1000 children
• Incidence of childhood asthma in remaining city neighborhoods (unexposed) was 3.1 per 1000 children
• Incidence of childhood asthma in the population overall was 5.1 per 1000 children

You have been asked to recommend whether the new facility should put costly practices in place to limit emissions that may contribute to childhood asthma. To make the case for recommending these practices, you must provide evidence that the facility is impacting the risk of childhood asthma in the population overall. What measure of excess risk will you calculate to show this? Do you have the information to calculate this? If so, calculate that measure. If not, what additional information would you need?
