A 30 ft tape weighing 3 lb and with a cross sectional area of 0.01 in2 was standardized and found to be 30.02 ft at 680F, with 20 lb tension and fully supported . This tape was used to measure a total distance of about 80 ft. The first 60 ft has a uniform 30% slope but the other 20 m was horizontal. The temperature was constant at 850 F, the tape was fully supported throughout and a tension of 30 lb was applied to each tape length. The observed distances were 30.0 ft, 30.0 ft., and 20.0 ft. Calculate the horizontal distance between the points.
Assume E = 3 x 107 lb/in2
and K = 6.45 x 10-6 per unit length per 0F.
Hint: This problem is very similar to the second problem we solved in class (see the detailed PowerPoint presentation I posted). Just to assist you to solving this I am drawing a sketch of how the profile looks.
Do not apply the length correction here.
Going through the presentation "Tape Corrections Explained" will definitely help you in this.
