The tungsten filament of an incandescent lightbulb has a temperature of approximately 3000 K. The emissivity of tungsten is approximately 1/3, and you may assume that it is independent of wavelength.

a) If the bulb gives off a total of 100 Watts, what is the surface area of its filament in square millimeters?
b) At what value of the photon energy does the peak in the bulb’s spectrum occur? What is the wavelength corresponding to this photon energy?
c) Sketch the spectrum of light given off by this filament. Indicate the region on the graph that corresponds to visible wavelengths, between 400 nm and 700 nm.
d) Calculate the fraction of the bulb’s energy that comes out as visible light. Check your result from part c.
e) To increase the efficiency of an incandescent bulb, would you want to raise or lower the temperature?

What is the eigenvalue of sz for the undeflected particles : Consider a system of two bound particles (e.g., two nucleons bound by the weak force), of spins S1, S2, with s1 = s2 = 1/2. In an external magnetic field, the interaction Hamiltonian is H = µB · S, with S = (S1 + S2). A random distribution (contai..
Beginning in time has important philosophical implications : A century ago, scientists believed that the universe was infinite with no beginning and no end. Einstein then predicted that the universe is either contracting or expanding. Why do you think Einstein thought that the universe had no beginning? Do you..
Explain why the electron density of hydrogen : Explain why the electron density of hydrogen is very nearly 6x10^26 electrons/kg. Explain why the electron density of all other low atomic number materials is nearly 3 x 10^26 electrons/kg. speculate why the electron density of materials might differ..
Average value of the potential energy of the electron : The mean or average value of the potential energy of the electron in a hydrogen atom can be found by integrating the potential function with the corresponding radial probability density. Calculate the heat capacity-compare to experimental result : In this problem you will model helium-3 as a non-interacting Fermi gas. Although 3He liquefies at low temperatures, the liquid has an unusually low density and behaves in many ways like a gas because the forces between the atoms are so weak. Heliu..
Commutation relations of the angular momentum : Prove that, given two angular momenta, L and S, their sum J = L+ S satisfies the commutation relations of the angular momentum (and therefore has the all the general properties of an angular momentum, e.g., the ladder structure, etc.).
A projectile is fired from the origin : A projectile is fired from the origin (at y = 0 m) as shown in the figure. The initial velocity components are = 920 and = 79 . The projectile reaches maximum height at point P, then it falls and strikes the ground at point Q. In the figure, the y-co..
Temperature-relative humidity on leeward side of mountains : Westerly winds coming off the Pacific Ocean rise over the Rocky Mountain, which rise to a height of approximately 15,000 ft (580 hPa). The air on the western side of the mountain range is at 800 hPa (T = 70F, r = 0.75), and will subside on the easter..
