Question: If a practice manager has trouble determining how many appointment slots were unutilized, or if the practice's appointment durations vary, could he instead use session duration (i.e. four-hour block of time) and available hours to calculate the fill rate? Why or why not?

You don't want to be operating at or above 100 percent, on average, over time. That would mean that you are consistently exceeding your capacity, which creates frustration (if your capacity was indeed realistic and desirable), generates employee overtime, and leads you down a path to push work into the future in order to protect yourself from this excess demand. In fact, you want to be operating right at or slightly less than 100 percent in order to handle previously scheduled appointments as well as preserve and accommodate slots for same-day requests from patients and referring physicians.
