Question: Microsoft Exchange server and Microsoft Outlook client are the most popular email configurations in the business world. Up until the cloud, companies had to purchase all of the hardware and software to install and maintain Exchange at their business on premise. Hardware has a typical 4 year life span before it needs to be updated. With the advent of the cloud, businesses have the option to purchase access to a cloud-based Exchange server that is hosted off premise via Microsoft at a much lower cost. This assignment compares both the hosted (on-premise) scenario (left hand table) and the cloud scenario (right hand table) found in this assignment's Ch4 HW excel sheet. Your analysis will be for a new small business that is starting with 5 employees. Since the hardware environment is good for four years, we will also need to ensure that we calculate the total cost of our cloud environment for four years and 5 users to have an accurate comparison.
For the hosted scenario, a Dell Server was provided that includes the operating system, processors with multiple cores, several main memory (RAM) modules, several secondary storage hard drives, along with the cost ofExchange server that is installed on the hardware, and the quantity and cost of outlook client access licenses (CALs). Since this is being hosted on premise, a company will need part of a system administrator's time to maintain the system (roughly 4hrs or 10% a week). Since the system administrator's salary is $50K per year, we will need to account for benefits (1.3 is a typical number). Therefore the 'real' cost to a company for a sys admin in this scenario is $65K ($50K x 1.3).
Calculate the extended price in column D for each line item (rows 2-8 and 10-13) and then place totals in cell D9,14, and 15. The capital required to get the Exchange server up and going is the price of the server along with the Exchange and CAL costs. However, the total cost of ownership must also take into account the system administrator cost for four (4) years. For simplification purposes, the space required and the electricity and cooling (HVAC) have been ignored.
In addition to the calculations, one must answer the embedded questions in the xlsx. Place answers in cells B19:B27 and G18:G23. You must have formulas for cells D2:D15 and G2:M2 to get credit.
