Problem- Ethanol has a heat of combustion of 1367 kJ/mol, a molar mass of 46.07 g/mol and a density of 0.7893 g/cm^3. Octane has a heat combustion of 5450 kJ/mol, a molar mass of 114.23 g/mol and a density of 0.7025 g/cm^3. (a) Calculate the enthalpy released by burning (i) 1.00 L of ethanol and (ii) 1.00 L of octane. (b) How much less efficient (in percent) is burning ethanol compared to octane on a per volume basis?
