In this activity, you will use an online tool to calculate the ecological footprint of your lifestyle.
Ecological footprint analysis is one approach to gauging our environmental impacts on the planet. Use the online tool developed by the Global Footprint Network to calculate your own ecological footprint (https://www.footprintnetwork.org/en/index.php/GFN/page/calculators/). After you are done, answer the following questions and be prepared to discuss them with your class:
1. How much is your ecological footprint? How many planets would we need to support humanity if everyone maintained your lifestyle?
2. What factors are the largest contributors to your footprint? Food? Shelter? Services?
3. What are some possible steps you could take to decrease your footprint?
4. How would your footprint change if you changed your dietary habits or transportation modes in the tool?
5. Now, answer the questions in the tool again as if you lived in a different country. What do you see as the cause of any difference in the size of ecological footprint?
6. Imagine you are an urban planner working for a city council. What would you recommend the city council do to reduce residents' ecological footprints?
