A 4.5 m high retaining wall contains a level, cohesionless backfill that has the following characteristics:

For parts A to C below, assume that the backfill soil is fully drained and that no water pressure acts against the wall.

447_Calculate the at-rest earth pressure.png

A. Calculate the at-rest earth pressure (po) exerted at the base of the wall in kN/m2.

B. Calculate the at-rest resultant force (Po) exerted at the base of the wall in kN per meter of length.

C. Plot the wall pressure diagram and show the location on the wall where the resultant force Po acts.

D. If the water table suddenly rises to the surface of the backfill, calculate: the new value of the at-rest earth pressure (p0) exerted at the base of the wall; the new value of the resultant force Po; and the water force Pw. Assume a saturated unit weight

Tsai = 8.0 kN/m3.

E. If this retaining wall is restrained against lateral movement and tilting (as in the case of most basement walls), is the at-rest earth pressure condition appropriate to use for design purposes? Explain your answer.
