A study of students admitted to the UCSB graduate school from U0 and Cal State schools recorded the grade point average for a sample these stu- dents. In the sample of 627 students, 329 were graduating from one of the UC schools and 298 graduated from one of the Cal State schools. We want to test if the GPA for the two populations are the same or not so I calculated the sum of the ranks of the Cal State students, W = 99, 235.

(a) Calculate the appropriate Mann-Whitney U statistic.

(b) Find the approximate p-value for this test.

(c) What advantage does the Mann-Whitney U test have over the typical two-sample t-test?

(d) What is the main disadvantage of this nonparametric test?
