A midwestern power plant burns 2 x 106 tons of coal annually. The coal contains 2% sulfur by weight. A limestone scrubber removes 90% of the sulfur dioxide from the flue gasses. An ESP removes 99% of the flyash, amounting to 40,000 tons annually. Calculate the theoretical minimum amount of limestone (CaCO3) required annually to remove the SO2, based on the stoichiometric reaction. Calculate the annual amount of limestone (mls) used if 35% goes through the process unreacted. Calculate the mass of calcium sulfite dihydrate (mCSD) that would be produced annually from the process. Estimate the annual amount of solid waste byproduct that is produced at the plant annually, as mSW = mCSD + 0.35 mls + mash. If the solid waste is landfilled into an area equal to 25 acres (1.1 x 106 ft2), estimate the increased height of the landfill resulting from one year of operation. Assume rhosw = 120 lbm/ft3, MCa = 40, Ms = 32 and MO = 16. Assume all of the coal sulfur exits the furnace outlet as SO2.
