Assignment - Venues, Energy & Transport
The purpose of this assignment is to identify appropriate destinations and venues based on emissions calculations and venue certifications. You will review a scenario and then make a decision on where your event will take place and calculate the appropriate emissions. You will justify and explain your decision. Scenario: You are planning a conference in the United States. The conference needs to be in a major urban area with a major airport nearby.
You want to find:
1) The most sustainable convention center,
2) In the most sustainable city possible and
3) Calculate the amount of flight emissions by your attendees.
You are looking for the least amount of emissions to and from the destination (see calculator link below).
Assumptions for this scenario: There will be 3,000 attendees at your conference. Approx. 1,500 attendees will be located at or flying to the event from Seattle. Approx. 1,000 attendees will be located at or flying to the event from New York. Approx. 500 attendees will be located at or flying to the event from Chicago. *You may pick one of those three cities for hosting your event or a different one if you find a more sustainable city, better venue or the emissions are less! Depending on your justification for your destination/venue that you select, and based on the emissions calculations you make - you will present your case as to why you would host your conference will be at a particular location. You may need to do an emission calculations for several cities with sustainable venues in order to determine the best outcome.
NOTE: You are doing the math to find the least amount of CO2 (KG).
Written Assignment:
Explain why you chose the destination and venue. Explain how the city is attempting to be sustainable.
Explain which certification(s) your venue (conference or convention center or other space) has and explain why you chose it over other options you considered.
Create TWO TABLES FOR TWO DIFFERENT DESTINATION CITIES that you are considering. Include in each table the following information (assume an economy flight): Round trip To/From Destination (Flight Leg).
Note: You will list in your table all three destinations. Number of passengers (see assumptions provided) Amount of aircraft fuel burn/journey (use the metric (KG/KM) Total passengers' CO2/journey (KG) for roundtrip flight Calculate the total emissions for all flights to the event.
Example Table to Fill In (revise/fill in as needed if you use it): Host City Option 1 Number of passengers Cabin Class Total aircraft fuel burn/journey (KG) Total passengers CO2/journey (KG) City 1 to Event City RT Economy City 2 to Event City RT Economy City 3 to Event City RT Economy TOTAL ------------------ Remember - fill out two tables for potential event host cities that you are considering. You may need to do more to find the best emissions level, but I am requiring two tables in your write up. Explain which cities you considered (at least the two represented in your table, but any others that you may have tried, too.) And, explain what outcomes you found from your venue/destination search and emission calculations. Justify your final site selection providing details about how the destination, venue and flights are the most sustainable option for your event.
