A 6m thick layer of sand overlies a 8m thick clay layer, below which is an impermeable stratum. The water table is at ground surface. For both layers assume unit weight as 20 KN/m3. For the clay, relationship between void ratio and effective stress (units KN/m3) can be expressed as:

e=0.920-0.42log(σ'/100)

A point load from a pier applies at ground surface which its magnitude is 1000KN. Calculate primary consolidation settlement of the clay layer at a distance of one meter from the point of application of the load.
