The VCH_cass14 gene was cloned for over-expression in the bacterial host Escherichia coli (BL21 (DE3) pLysS). The protein sequence was engineered with additional six-histidine residues at its N-terminus. The protein was discovered within the mobile gene array (at cassette 14) of a marine-dwelling species of Vibrio cholera, and remains of unknown function.
