Finite Element Analysis Assignment
A finite element (FE) analysis was performed on a simply supported steel alloy cantilever beam in lab. The 1000 mm long beam consisted of a cross section of 20 mm width and 80 mm height. The pressure load applied to the top of the beam was 200 kPa. During the analysis you recorded the maximum displacement of the beam predicted by your solid model and FE analysis. Significant material properties of the steel alloy were identified as:
E = 210,000 N/mm2
n = 0.28
y= 620.422 N/mm2
For this assignment calculate the maximum deflection for this beam and loading using the superposition method. A handout detailing the superposition method was provided to you.
Based on your superposition deflection calculation, calculate the percent error present in your computer deflection prediction. This process is necessary to benchmark your computer model and analysis, strengthening your level of confidence in your computer model results.
You are expected to submit a neatly hand written analysis, similar to that as expected when submitting a thoroughly documented mechanics homework assignment. Provide a sketch of the beam identifying the pressure load applied and beam dimensions. Identify necessary material properties used in the analysis. When using equations, for instance the superposition method relationships, be certain to reference the source used for defining these relationships. Also, make certain to highlight the percent error present in your computer results.
