Case three:
JoEllen is a 37-year-old female. She is 68 inches tall and 220 lb. She has struggled with weight since the birth of her first child 10 years ago. When she was pregnant with her second child 6 years ago, she had gestational diabetes which put her at risk for developing diabetes. Over the two past years, her blood sugar has steadily increased, and her doctor recommended that she lose at least 7% of her body weight which should help to bring her glucose back to normal. She has tried losing weight in the past on various diet plans but always gives up because it does not seem to work. She struggles with emotional eating and feels bad when she overeats. Her children are in a lot of activities, so her evening meal is usually fast food. She works part time as a cashier. She does not have any regular activity. She eats her breakfast and evening snack while watching TV.
She is thinking about trying the fad diet XYZ which restricts grains, legumes, dairy, and fruit but allows protein and vegetables. It does not address physical activity, just intake.

1) Calculate her calorie needs using the estimated energy requirements formula (do not use MyPlate). Remember to use the correct order of operations for math. Show your work. How many calories per day would she have to subtract to lose 1 lbs. per week? How many calories a day should she be consuming for weight loss?
2) Based on her estimated calorie needs from above for weight loss, how does her intake compare to the MyPlate recommendations for the calorie level you calculated above?
Remember these are ounce or cup equivalents. See "eat healthy" in MyPlate for ounce and cup equivalents.
3) Based on question number 2, what changes should she make to decrease her calorie intake? Name two things that are not accounted for in the MyPlate plan which are contributing to weight gain? What should she do to address them?
4) What would you tell her about the diet she plans on trying? What are two potential nutritional issues?
5) Name at least two behavior strategies that may help her lose weight. Describe each strategy.
