Assignment-
Essential reading: Chapter 3 of Andy Field will describe in detail the how to work with variables and data in SPSS.
Practice exercises.
1. Open the data file "BDI.sav" in SPSS. This file contains scores from participants on the Beck Depression Inventory, one of the most widely used self-report measures of depression. The file reports participant's scores as they enter an intervention to treat their depression.
(a) Write a hypothesis that would enable you to interrogate this data. Why would you want to compare participants' scores in each treatment group at the start of a study?
The gender variable has already been created for you in the data file for this week. You do not need to do this again for this week's assignment. However, the following are the steps that were used to create the gender variable.
2. Create a gender variable (in variable view).
3. Create m and f labels in the relevant section in variable view.
4. Enter the data in Data View. (Remember you need to code these as 1 or 2).
b) Calculate descriptive statistics.
1. Using the "split file function" compare groups by condition and gender.
2. Run an analysis of the data sets descriptive statistics.
3. Report the table.
4. Which condition x gender has the highest mean value?
c) Create histograms showing the distribution of scores.
5. This time split the file for Condition only.
6. Create a series of histograms that illustrate the distribution of scores for each condition.
7. Are the results for the different conditions normally distributed?
