Question 1.

Let us assume there is a two-terminal box. There are one resistor, one capacitor and one inductor inside the box. They can be connected in any configuration. You only have access to a DC source, signal generator, oscilloscope and one 1 ? resistor. How can you define the connection type and numerical values of R, L and C inside the box? Explain your answers for each connection configuration in detail.

Question 2.

Let us consider a 600 μF capacitor. Three of those capacitors are connected in series together and connected to an AC voltage source.

a) Assuming the capacitors as non-ideal, each capacitor has a small internal resistor in series with each capacitor. This will cause that the voltage across all three capacitors are not divided equally. Draw a circuit composed of resistors only which can force an equal voltage across all series-connected capacitors. Define an appropriate value for each resistor. Explain how the proposed circuit forces an equal voltage across the series-connected capacitors.

b) The capacitors will be damaged if they are subjected to any fast changes in the current passing through them (i.e. they are sensitive to high di/dt). How can the capacitors be protected versus the fast changes in the current passing through them. Draw the circuit and explain how the proposed circuit can protect the capacitors.

c) Let us assume the voltage source connected across the series-connected capacitors is 50 ∠0? rms, 50 Hz. The voltage source has a capacity of 100 VA. Calculate the current passing through the capacitors.

Question 3.

Let us assume we have a DC voltage measured in a circuit, called Vin. We intend to build a circuit such that it has a transfer function defined as

H(s) = Vout(s)/Vin(s) = (s2 + s + 1) / s

Draw this electric circuit. The circuit can be composed of resistors, inductors, capacitors and opamps only. Then verify your circuit for any arbitrary DC voltage used instead of Vin by PSPICE.
