Question: Concern about concussions in youth sport is increasing. A group of researchers from the University of Hawaii conducted a study to investigate the rate of concussion in youth athletes!. They retrospectively obtained data from a random sample 10,334 youth athletes in Hawaii and found that a concussion had been reported for 1250 of the athletes. Follow the Prepare, Check, Calculate, and Conclude steps to construct and interpret the 90% confidence interval for the proportion of youth athletes who experience a concussion. [/7] It is often stated that 1 in 10 youth athletes sustain a concussion. Does your confidence interval support this claim? [/1] In reality, this study did not include athletes from sports commonly associated with high rates of concussions outside of Hawaii such as hockey, lacrosse, and rugby. Does this change your interpretation of the confidence interval? If so, how?
