A fellow I know wanted to know the coefficient of friction between steel and commercial carpet. The value was not in the tables of any textbook he had, so he devised an experiment. He had a filing cabinet partially packed with papers and books that weighed, he estimated 150 lbs, because he could lift up one end off the floor, but could not comfortably lift the whole cabinet. The cabinet was on the level floor covered with the carpet. He just pushed on the cabinet starting at the top, going down, and measured the height off the floor where the cabinet stopped tipping and started sliding. He did it pushing on both the wide side and the narrow side of the cabinet. The measurements of the filing cabinet were 54 inches high, 18 inches wide and 26.5 inches deep. When he pushed on the 18 inch wide side, the cabinet started to slide at a height off the floor of 28 inches, when he pushed 26.5 inch side, the cabinet started to slide at a height off the floor of 15.5 inches. Based on these numbers calculate an estimate of the friction coefficient of steel on carpet?
A force P is applied to bent rod ABC, which may be supported in four different ways. In each case, if possible, determine the reactions at the supports.
Determine the minimum horizontal force necessary for 200 lb man to scale crevice (using his feet and back). The coefficient of static friction between his shoes and his back against the wall is 0.4.
he City of Leeds (England) discharges about 1.4 m3/sec to the Aire River. Without the wastewater discharge, the river flow rate would be 12.7 m3/sec. Given that BOD(river) = 3.0 mg/L and BOD(wastewater) = 30.0 mg/L
A stream with a flow of 22 mgd contains 180 mg/L of sodium cyanide in the form of NaCN. Chlorine can be added to destroy the NaCN waste according to the reaction shown below. Find the theoretical minimum amount of chlorine required (in lb/day).
A wastewater is discharged to a stream with a reoxygenation constant of 0.5 day-1 and a velocity of 1 m/sec. The oxygen saturation concentration in the stream is 11 mg/L.
Calculations with steam mixed with additional steam at a different pressure, A steam press at 650Kpa + dryness fraction of 0.9% flows along a pipe at a rate of 3.5Kg per second
Determine a set of a rectangular beam design values b,d and As that will be needed to support a factored bending moment Mu= 450 Kip-ft. Use f'c= 4500 psi and fy= 40000 psi.
Determine the percent error n in replacing the sine and the tangent of an angle by the value of the angle in radians for angle values 5 degrees, 10 degrees, and 20 degrees. Explain the qualitative difference between the sine and tangent results
The four approach volumes per day at this intersection are 28,648, 23,856, 12,150, and 10,174. The crash totals for the last 3 years are 91, 96, and 87. What is the annual crash rate for this intersection
Water enters a two-armed lawn sprinkler along the vertical axis (normal to the page) at a rate of 80 L/s and leaves the sprinkler nozzles as 1.5-cm diameter jets at an angle of from the tangential direction.
The column is constructed from high-strength concrete and four A-36 steel reinforcing rods. If it is subjected to an axial force of 37.5 kN , determine the required diameter of each rod so that one-fourth of the load is carried by the concrete
The beams support one-way slabs, 6 inches thick that span 20 feet center to center. Assume that the beams are 16 inches wide and 24 inches deep. Determine the dead load in pounds per linear foot for the beams, from the concrete structure alone.
