Question: Sea otters can eat 20% to 23% of their body weight in food each day. An average sea otter weighs 23 kg (roughly 50 pounds), and there are 20 to 30 otters per square kilometer where they are present. An average sea urchin weighs 0.55 kg. Assuming that the otters eat only sea urchins, use these data to calculate a conservative estimate of the number of sea urchins per square kilometer that an otter population would be expected to eat each year.
