BUSM 4460 Building Modelling and Simulation Assignment - RMIT University, Australia
Assessment - Discussion paper - Essay
This assessment tests your achievement of the following - Course and Program Learning Outcomes:
Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs) -
CLO1 - Critically analyse and apply the principles of building simulation to the design, operation, construction and assessment of energy efficient and sustainable buildings.
CLO2 - Evaluate and communicate complex sustainability strategies utilizing modelling and simulation methods to inform the sustainable building design process
Program Learning Outcomes -
1. Determine and apply knowledge of complex sustainable building theory, principles and practice, to contribute to the design and management of sustainable buildings
2. Critically analyse, synthesise and refl ect on sustainable building theory and recent developments, both local and international, to extend and challenge knowledge and practice.
3. Professionally communicate and justify sustainable building design principles, strategies, solutions and/or outcomes, engaging effectively with diverse stakeholders, including across the government and industry sectors.
4. Adopt a building performance and systems approach and apply specialist knowledge and technical skills to creatively address the diverse needs of sustainable building stakeholders.
Summary - What you have to do
For this assignment you will write an individual discussion paper in which you need to critically reflect on the consideration of building occupant behaviour in the heating and cooling assumptions in NatHERS.
Instructions -
Overview - This individual assessment task requires you to write an essay in which you discuss the consideration of building occupant behaviour in building modelling and simulation in the transition to low carbon and sustainable buildin gs with a focus on the heating and cooling assumptions in NatHERS.
Your essay should at least be gui ded by the following questions:
1. How is occupant behaviour currently ac knowledged in the heating and cooling assumptions in NatHERS?
2. How do these approaches reflect the reality?
3. What are the benefits and challenges or limitations of considering occupant behaviour in the heating and cool ing assumptions in NatHERS?
4. In the future, how may the consideration of occupant behaviour in the heating and cooling assumptions in NatHERS be enhanced?
Learning objectives of this task -
1. Identify the ways that occupant heati ng and cooling behaviours have been integrated in NatHERS.
2. Synthesise the evidence of the accuracy of heating and cooling assumptions in NatHERS or the benefits and challenges / limitations of these approaches.
3. Critically reflect on the current approac h for the transition to lower carbon and sustainable buildings.
4. Propose and justify alternative approaches for policy, practice and research.
5. Present your exploration of the role of occupant heating and cooling behaviour in NatHERS in a discussion paper, i.e. a written essay, following academic conventions.
The task -
1. Explore the role of occupant heating and cooling behaviours in NatHERS through independent research and review of quality sources.
2. Synthesise relevant evidence, opinion s and/or perspectives, research and/or developments.
3. Present your findings in an essay format of 3000 words (excl. list of references).
