Business Statistics and Data Analysis Assignment -
This assignment will require you to source the share price movements for five (5) listed companies, graph and statistically analyse the companies and compare your portfolio of five shares to the ASX200.
1. Select 5 companies listed on an International Stock Exchange.
a. One ASX Bank
b. One ASX Mining Company
c. One ASX Food and Staples ie Woolworths
d. One International Share
e. One company you have a particular interest in.
2. Write a one paragraph, brief description for each company. At least covering the company's main activities, its size (Capital and Total Assets). For the company that you have an interest in, write half a page, explaining why this business is interesting to you.
3. Using "Yahoo Finance", download to an Excel spreadsheet the month end share price for each share, for the last five years. ie 60 data points per company. Plus, for the same time period, the ASX200 month end data.
4. Using the first month as the base, calculate the percentage (%) change each month, for each share and the ASX200.
5. Graph all the percentage data on one graph. ie 5 shares and the ASX200.
6. If, 5 years ago, you invested $100,000 evenly ($20,000/share) into a portfolio, what would your portfolio be worth now? Calculate and show this on your spreadsheet.
7. Then create another graph comparing the 5 year monthly portfolio changes against the ASX200. Did your portfolio do better than the ASX200 index?
8. Using Excel, calculate the Standard Deviation and Mean for each share, your portfolio and the ASX200. Explain what the Standard Deviations are telling you about risk?
Assume you will be presenting your results to management, in a report.
