Alan works for himself as a freelance contractor. He has been doing this for 15 years and is bored. He wants to do something different. He has good regular work and earns a good salary. He knows his jobs well and is often asked to do jobs because he has such a good reputation for doing the job well. He is able to work when it suits him most of the time but he is bored and no longer wishes to do this job. He has a family to care for. His wife also works full time.
He wants to set up his own business running an e-business (he wants to sell men's shoes). He has researched this for some years, knows the amount of money he could make etc. He is not a salesman and a large part of running an e-business is to use social media and marketing strategies. This is the one thing that puts him off. His wife's job could pay the bills but there would be no money left for luxuries. They have minimal savings.
For years now, he has gone over and over this. Yes, I'm going to do it... no I'm not... He is stuck in a vicious cycle of what to do. He comes to you for advice.
Set Task 1:
Imagine Alan (mentioned in the case study above) has come to you for a business coaching session. Sit down with him and prepare a swot analysis for starting his own e-business.
Prepare a list of suggestions for Alan on what he should consider with regards to his existing job and the e-business. Try to be creative in the options you offer him.
