Purpose

This assignment is intended to broaden and deepen your perspective on the application of business ethics in the international environment.

Assignment

Select an ethical dilemma (refer to Chapter 5) that exists in international business*. Explain the ethical dilemma, and evaluate the ethical dilemma (presenting both "pros and cons") in the context of one or more of the philosophical approaches that is discussed in the text, whether it be the Straw Men, Utilitarian or Kantian, Rights Theories, or Justice theories. To bring the issue to life, you should refer to documented real situations which can be found in the news or journals.

The ethical dilemma should be a location outside of the United States, and involve companies that are doing business globally.

Suggestions for Ethical Dilemmas

Labor issues - child labor, hiring discrimination based upon age and gender, other

Environmental Issues - moving production to locations that have less stringent water, air and land use regulations

Facilitation payments

Developing partnerships with a foreign government to obtain preferential treatment

Define the ethical dilemma including the context in which it exists

What are the proposed solutions?

What are the PROS and CONS of doing nothing versus implementing one of the proposed solutions
