Now that you have read a bit of the introduction and Chapter 1 of Schwalbe, consider his point on page 35 that "we are taught that inequality arises only because some people are smarter or work harder than others." He goes on to say on page 42 that "we're looking at a system of relationships and collective practices, not the idiosyncratic, uncoordinated actions of individuals." When many people discuss inequality, they tend to insert personal anecdotes like "so-and-so got ahead despite enormous obstacles because she worked hard and didn't give up." Discuss your reactions to Schwalbe's statements and this perspective on hard work and not giving up. Do you agree or disagree, and why?
