Assessment brief
You are a team of HR Consultants pitching to work with a large International Organisation: ArcelorMittal.
Please do consult academic literature and carry out extensive research on the company and relevant other materials, for example those relating to international business, international HRM, talent management, global trends, etc. In your meeting with the company and in the reports you will submit to them, ArcelorMittal are looking for in-depth analysis together with your recommendations. They are specifically keen to see your alignment of strategic concepts and operational issues.
ArcelorMittal are expecting the highest standards and a professional conduct from any consultant who they see.
Business meetings
Students are allocated to small teams, based on maximising diversity among the team members. They will act as an HR management consultancy team. The consultancy teams will be in competition to win a HR consultancy contract from the client company. To this end, the teamsare asked to attend a business meeting with the clientorganisation's strategic decision makers, including its HR specialist.
The meetinggives an opportunity to briefly present an overview of the team'sanalysis and thinking to the client organisation'spanel of managerial representatives. The meeting will then move on to a discussion on specific HR issues. The groups are required to handle questions from the panel.
Each team's performance is assessed in terms of the quality of their analysis and their proposals in the role-play, including the way its members respond and adapt to the dynamics of the business meeting and collaborate as a team.
The teams should be seeking to impress the client's senior managers. Much will depend upon everyone's meticulous preparation and the team's conduct and persuasiveness throughout the meeting. Thus, to help the teams prepare for this assessment, much of the workshop time is geared around developing the students' analytical skills and business acumen. Tutors also offer guidance through group support sessions.
The team members receive the same grade, subject to adjustments on the basis of evidence submitted re: the NBS group work policy (including peer evaluation).
Business report
The individual assignmentrequires you to submit a short 1,000 word business report, which focuses on your contribution to the team's analysis of the case study material (see ArcelorMittal IHRM assessment brief) and proposals for the organisation's strategic decision makers.
Your report should take the form of a formal business report and include the following sections:
1. NBS Front Cover
2. Title
3. Table of Contents
4. Brief Introduction and Terms of Reference (~50 words)
5. Main Body
a. A succinct summary of the team's case (~100 words)
b. More detailed, critical discussion focused on your individual and specific contribution, including analysis and recommendations (~800 words)
6. Conclusion (~50 words)
7. References
The reports must include relevant theory and concepts, and referencing using Harvard style. Both the front matter (i.e. the NBS Front Cover, Title, and Table of Contents) and the end matter (the list of references) are excluded from the word count.
