Introduction - The course provides students with an advanced understanding of the concepts, theories, and techniques of managing change in an organization by critically assessing the theories of organizational culture and the psychological contract. The course will analyze the principles of organizational development, and discuss the concepts of the learning organization and Knowledge Management within the context of organizational change. The course will examine a range of tools and techniques, which can facilitate the change process, based on a number of theoretical models.
Course Learning Outcomes - In this assessment, you should be able to:
CLO1: Synthesize and comment critically on the importance of addressing the cultural dimension of change.
CLO2: Evaluate the concept of the learning organization and its impact on change.
CLO3: Critically reflect on reactions to change and consider strategies to manage these.
Program Learning Outcomes - The Course Learning Outcomes (CLO's) indicated above are mapped to your overall (MLOD) Program Learning Outcomes (PLO's). This assessment tests your achievement in the program with reference to the following PLO's:
PLO 1: Critically evaluate the ethical and cultural dimensions of leadership.
PLO 2: Synthesize the purpose, design, functions, and character of leadership and organizational development.
PLO 3: Appraise the role of leadership in driving organizational outcomes.
Assessment - Assessment Requirement:
This assessment is meant to evaluate your knowledge, skills and competencies acquired during the course. It is designed as an analytical report by using the teaching materials, concepts and literature presented during the course.
Students will submit an in-depth report of 4,000 words (excluding references) that will assess the student's ability to align theory with practice and skills to manage challenges of organizational change in your place of employment. Assessment details are as below:
1. Identify a substantive change, which was made in a small or medium sized business in the UAE. Provide details about the sector/industry/market in which your selected business operates. Justify why you selected this business and how your selection is important to the future of your context.
2. Discuss the precedents, key issues and reasons leading to the situation necessitating the change.
3. Identify relevant literature from research journals, provide a review of the current state of managing organization change, and discuss how the research fits into the wider context of the situation you selected.
4. Critically analyse the complexity of the problem. What was the significance of the problem? How was the current situation being effected in the absence of change? What was the proposed change? How was it implemented and managed? How did the individuals receive the change? What were the challenges experienced during the implementation of the change? Was the change management successfully implemented? What were the learnings from this process of change management?
5. As a leader, what inferences do you draw from this change management situation, what are the conclusions and what are your recommendations for an effective change management process? What theories and/or models would you apply in your proposed solution and how would they be applied?
6. Your report should be a critical report about the change management process, reflecting good depth and breadth of your knowledge, analytical skills and competencies acquired during the course.
7. Avoid selecting organizations where you will face difficulties in showing data from the local context. Please also refrain from selecting big sized organisations as this is not the aim of this report.
