BUS5AP Analytics in Practice Assignment, Semester 2, 2019, La Trobe University, Australia
Assignment 1 - Problem formulation of analytical tasks
Background and Situation - Imagine1 that you are the business analytics advisor to the Lord Mayor of Melbourne, Sally Capp:
- First woman to be directly elected as Lord Mayor.
- First woman to hold the post of Agent-General for Victoria in the UK, Europe and Israel.
- She has also served as the CEO for the Committee for Melbourne and COO of the Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
- She began her career as a Solicitor, after completing Law (Hons) and Commerce degrees at the University of Melbourne.
- She has held senior roles at both KPMG and ANZ, and she took the small business she co-founded to the ASX.
- Most recently she was Victorian Executive Director of the Property Council of Australia.
Over the past few years, the City of Melbourne has gathered a significant amount of data and have made it available to the public through an open data portal!
Your task is to prepare the briefing note and the underlying documentation. Please note, she is not asking you to do the work, but rather to propose a scope of work to be undertaken if she agrees. As you pull this together, please consider the following questions:
1. What exactly is the Lord Mayor asking you to do? (I.e., what is the scope of the assignment.) Is she asking for insight, a plan, an implementation, or a combination of the above? What is the deliverable(s)?
2. What constraints are you working to? What are the stated constraints, and what are the implied constraints?
3. What assumptions do you need to make? Are these assumptions reasonable?
4. After reviewing the available data, what idea do you want to pitch? Why should the Lord Mayor act upon your idea? What is the benefit and who receives the benefit? What are the risks?
5. Express the problem above in an issue tree. Articulate the data and analysis required for each relevant branch of the issue tree. Articulate the sub-deliverables as appropriate. State any assumptions that you may have.
6. How do you make it easy for the Lord Mayor to say "yes"?
Please prepare a brief (500 - 1000 word) briefing note pitching the idea. In addition, please attach your issue tree as an appendix to the briefing note.
Assignment 3 - Report to Stakeholders
Background and Situation - Recall from Assignments 1 & 2 that you are progressing an idea on behalf of the Lord Mayor of Melbourne, Sally Capp.
You are now to the point of being able to present your findings to the stakeholder group. The stakeholder group includes:
- The Lord Mayor (the decision maker)
- The CFO (who will be concerned around financial metrics and do-ability)
- The CIO (who will be interested in the degree to which your solution impacts the IT infrastructure and/or data)
- The Head of HR (who will be interested in how this solution impacts City of Melbourne staff)
- The COO (who has to make it work... whatever it is).
Task - Your task is two-fold:
- present a 5 minute discussion (inclusive of a 1 minute Q&A) of the key points to the stakeholder group (or a proxy thereof).
- submit a formal document (either as a written prose document or as a presentation).
You can submit either your full work (if you have chosen a relatively small opportunity) or interim findings (if you have chosen a larger / more intensive opportunity). As a general guide, your work should reflect approximately 80 hours of effort outside the classroom.
Note - Topic is waste management problem in Melbourne city. Actually you have to now prepare a detailed ppt. You have to perform analysis in this assignment using any analytical technique using data which is easily available on internet.
