Critical Commentary on Stephen Covey's "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People"
Your assignment is to read the ENTIRE book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey and write a critical commentary on the book. A critical commentary examines and critiques the ideas and concepts put forward, and supports such commentary with fact or reason. You may agree or disagree with elements of "7 Habits", but you must support and defend the position that you take.
Remember that it is impossible to comment on another's position unless you first understand that position. Truer understanding comes through experimenting with a concept through application.
The following criteria will be relied upon in grading the comment:
1. The commentary must evidence that you have read the entire book and understand the concepts put forward. This evidence comes through in the way you show understanding of the scope of "7 Habits". Although you may choose not to discuss each habit, or concept, in equal depth, you must still evidence an understanding of the "package" put forward in "7 Habits". If it is concluded that the entire book was not read, you will receive a zero grade regardless of what you submitted. (I urge you to avoid the temptation to take shortcuts.
Consider how such actions reflect upon your character, the very essence of what lies at the heart of success in entrepreneurship.)
2. Your submission must not be a book report (a summary of the book); content should include your analysis and opinions of the book supported by examples of personal insights and applications of the ideas in the book should be used.
3. You may comment on the concepts in the book as they relate to entrepreneurship, business in general, life in general, or to you as a person. You MUST use at least one of the three case studies we did in class (Mooney, Bailey's, Pizza Hut) to illustrate the concepts, comments and critiques.
4. The submission must not exceed 10 pages (double-spaced, 12 pt font). (There is no minimum page requirement, but anything less than 7 pages would generally indicate a lack of sufficient depth.) The page count does NOT include the title page, bibliography or table of contents (which you must include).
5. A title page is required; titles and subtitles within the commentary should be used. Show some planning in your presentation. Guard against the "one-big-paragraph" trap.
