Building a Wind Farm - Preliminary Investigation
The wind speed of a particular site in South Australia is measured at a height of 50 m. The hourly wind data over a period of one year (or 8760 hours) is given in an Excel file (Wind_Data_Hourly.xlsx). The objective of this assignment is to conduct a preliminary investigation of building a wind farm at the site.
This is a group assignment and two students will work in a group. Each group is required to submit a single report that should include at least the following items.
1. Yearly wind speed profile.
2. Wind discrete histogram (at an interval of 1 m/s) and average wind speed.
3. Wind probability density function and its comparison with standard Rayleigh probability density function.
4. Select a large size wind turbine (in the order of MW) from a manufacturer website. Using power curve of the wind turbine and the wind discrete histogram, determine the annual energy delivered by the wind generating system using a spread sheet program. Also determine the capacity factor.
5. Estimate the values of capacity factor and annual energy delivered using average wind speed and turbine data supplied by the manufacturer. Compare the estimated values with the corresponding results found in step 4 and determine the errors in percentage.
6. Propose a feasible layout of a wind farm consisting of at least 30 identical wind turbines (as selected in step 4). Estimate the annual energy delivered by the wind farm.
The purpose of this assignment is to give students an opportunity to conduct a preliminary investigation of building a wind farm. The deliverables of the assignment are brief description of wind generating systems and the results of steps 1-6 with critical analysis and discussions. The assumptions and approximations used in evaluating the results should be clearly stated.
Report
The reports should have the following format: title, abstract, introduction, main body (with sections and sub-sections as required), conclusions and references. The source codes and illustrative materials (if any) may be included in an appendix. The report including appendix (if any) should be submitted via learnonline as a single pdf file.
