Building a Cell

Introduction

Now that you've had an opportunity to learn about the various organelles and how they function together, we use this information to build a hypothetical cell.

Consider the Simulation Below

You are a cell builder from an alien planet, you are tasked with building a cell. You start with a primitive bacterial cell from your alien planet. At some point, you encounter a merchant from Earth, who is selling organelles and cellular structures from Earth. This gives you the potential of evolving your cell into a multicellular organism, like those found on Earth.

  • You have $50 (of the planet's currency) and you want to purchase from the merchant.
  • What will you purchase?
  • Will you purchase everything all at once, or will you try out one or two and come back for more later (maybe generations later).
  • Note: You can come back multiple times.

Here is the merchant's inventory below:

OrganelleCostNucleoid $5Capsule$5Flagella/Cilia$5Nucleus$10Ribosomes$10Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum$10Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum$10Golgi Apparatus$15Lysosomes$10Vacuoles$10Peroxisomes$10Mitochondria$20Chloroplasts$20Cytoskeleton$15Extracellular Matrix$15Cell Junctions$20Cell Walls$15

Directions

Please use the questions below to guide your discussion.

  • In your post below, tell us why you purchased each organelle?
  • How do you think they will help your cell develop into a multicellular organism?
  • What kind of multicellular organism do you think the cell will evolve into?
  • Note: Keep in mind the organelles you already have (your starter cell is a bacterial cell).
  • Would eukaryotic organelles be better for helping you evolve into a multicellular organism?
  • Maybe you want to just upgrade your bacterial organelles and structures.
  • If you don't spend all your money, tell us why?
