Article - A leader's value can have significant impacts on their effectiveness as they approach their role. The values that a leader holds are often mirrored by their team, influencing the team's culture and behavior. The following are some ways in which values can affect a leader's effectiveness.
First of all, we believe that values can help leaders to build trust and credibility within a team, when their values are consistent with their actions. This can further generates a positive work environment where employees feel valued and respected.
Additionally, we think that values can play a crucial role in a leader's ability to encourage and inspire the team. When a leader's values are aligned with the role, he/she will be better able to communicate their visions.
Moreover, a leader will set an example of ethical behavior and demonstrate commitment to his/her values, which can inspire the team members to follow suit and create a positive work environment.
A leader's values can also greatly impact the decision making process. For example, if a leader's values are not inclusive or respectful of diversity, he/she might exhibit bias or prejudice in a team's decision-making, which can harm the team's morale and productivity. If a leader's values are not aligned with the benefits of the organization, they may also risk losing their position.
Emotional intelligence (EI) refers to the ability to recognize and manage one's own emotions, as well as the emotions of others (Elizabeth & Wolff, 2008). EI is one of the most important factors that a strong leader should have. The following points are some of the positive impacts that a strong EI in a leader can have.
Enable the leader to better connect with the employees, which will help to encourage and motivate people.
High EI will assist communication, collaboration within the team members.
However, having low EI in a leader could be very damaging for the team as well. The following are some of the negative impacts of having a low EI as a leader
A low emotional intelligence will impact the inter-relationship with the team members.
Low EI will enhance the poor stress management in the team.
Low EI could lead the leader towards micro management due to lower trust level within the team members
