Purpose: The aim of this assignment is to build on your ability to write an argumentative essay, while simultaneously performing a close reading of A Clockwork Orange. A close reading involves paying attention to textual details, citing them, and commenting on the significance of these passages. This type of close analysis forms the foundation of not only all English essays but other essays in the humanities.
Task: Write an organized essay on one (1) of the topics below.
Your essay should contain the following:
(1) an opening paragraph that ends with a clear, concise thesis statement that is a defendable argument
(2) body paragraphs that begin with argumentative topic sentences and use textual evidence from your primary source to support your argument.
(3) at least one (1) secondary source quoted in the essay and cited in Works Cited (preferably for reference, historical context, etc. and can be from the additional material in your book)
(4) a closing paragraph - conclusion that summarizes thesis/argument and main evidence
(5) a correct Works Cited list at the very end of the paper.
Each body paragraph must quote/reference/paraphrase at least one example from the novel. The essay should follow MLA guidelines, as outlined in Requirements for Essays.
Criteria: Your essay will be graded, in order of importance, on your ability to form, develop, and support an argument (is it persuasive?), your use of textual evidence (are your quotations well-chosen and do they support your argument?), your writing composition (is it concise, easy to read, in formal English, and free of grammatical and punctuation errors?), and on formatting (is it in proper MLA?).
Note on secondary sources: Please be aware that it is plagiarism to use a secondary source without citing it or paraphrasing, so all secondary sources, when used, must be documented.
