Poster Project - Smoking during long distance flights
Introduction:
Originally inflight smoking was permitted for travellers in all flights. In 1988 the United States banned smoking in domestic flights until the year 2000 when all international flights banned smoking during flights because all the smoke was retained within the cabin because there was no air recirculation filter. The main reason that caused it was to save money by changing the air in the cabin less frequently. People who smoke get frustrated when not allowed to smoke, especially during long distance flights and many avoid travelling for this reason. If a company offered this service it would benefit them economically because many smokers will prefer to travel with that company.
Background research:
The first time it was considered to ban smoking during flights was in 1972 in which a flight from Rio de Janeiro to Paris had to make an emergency landing due to too much smoke in the cabin which caused 123 people to die. The problem at the time was that the technology on air ventilation was not as good as nowadays. But with the technology we have today it is possible to have a good air ventilation system for smoking on airplanes and can also split the cabin into two parts; smokers and non-smokers, with different air ventilation systems in both cabins.
Aims and objectives:
The main aim of this project is to build an air ventilation system that will allow people to smoke during flights.
The objectives are:
• Research for anything relevant to the project
• Make different concepts and solutions to this problem
• Analyse and appraise the concepts to decide on best solution
• Develop the favoured and most suitable concept into a practical solution
• Carry out detailed costing of final concept
• Carry out a survey to smokers and non-smokers
Future work:
1. Survey for smokers and non-smokers
2. Research for types of smoke ventilation systems
3. Make Concept designs - at least 3 designs
4. Choose best suitable design
5. Sketch 3D/2D design
6. Costs
Conclusion:
To conclude so far on this project, it is desirable by smokers to smoke during long lasting flights and when it comes to the airlines, the passengers' satisfaction comes first which means they would consider this solution.
