"This movie represents the struggle that five women have to find their small share of happiness while having to buckle under societal and religious pressures. As you go through the movie, it is evident that there are several struggles and challenges which sometimes become harder due to societal standards and religious rules. The title Caramel paste refers to the blend of sugar, lemon juice, and water that is made into a caramel paste which is commonly used in beauty salons. It is used to soothe the skin during hair removal from legs and other places on the body where the removal process can be painful and uncomfortable. The director used this sweet-and-sour metaphor to refer to the daily relationships of the major female characters because it represents the mixture of feelings, combining all the good (sweet) moments with all the challenging situations (sour) they have to face throughout the movie. Having to deal with several different things, this movie also provides a representation of how these five women interact in addition to their responses to men, sex, relationships, and their bodies. This movie also demonstrates the effect of societal and religious pressures which causes tension, guilt, and fear in all of them. I believe this metaphor suits the movie perfectly because these five women go through a lot of situations that are both sweet and sour."
